Ménéac is equidistant from both Breton coasts, and there is a gorgeous lakeside beach close by. The house has a strong sense of its own dignified past, but its four-postered formality belongs more to the era of Sherlock Holmes (it is British-owned), with leather sofas, claw-foot bathtubs, family portraits and heavy oak chests for linen. The village sits on the western edge of Brocéliande, an enchanting fragment of France’s oldest forest, and the supposed home of King Arthur. There’s a mysteriousness to central Brittany that is not lost on Maison Ménéac. And we’ve found picture-postcard gîtes, with fairytale good looks but fitted kitchens, as at Beaufour-Druval in Normandy. We’ve found a romantic gîte in the floating gardens of Amiens and an art-filled gîte in the village of Giverny, where Monet made his home. We’ve found gîtes right on the water’s edge, where there are oysters for breakfast (Maisons Arin in Paimpol bay), or deep inland, as in Ménéac, on the fringe of France’s oldest forest. We’ve found British-run groups of gîtes ideal for families, with shared facilities such as a pool, badminton and vegetable garden (see Plélo or La Lohuas, both accessible from St Malo). We’ve found quirks of architecture, from a former dovecote in the grounds of 17th-century Ravenoville Manor to the tower of a castle just outside Boulogne, built a mere decade ago. So, to make your search more manageable, we’ve homed in on northern France - beautiful Brittany, Normandy and Hauts-de-France - and picked out 25 of the best gîtes, all within easy access of Channel ports. Additionally, thousands of others are now marketed by specialist agencies, while many gîtes promote themselves directly through their own websites, particularly if they are British-owned, as several here are. There’s more choice than ever the organisation Gîtes de France alone lists 48,000 properties. Of course, nothing stands still in travel, and now the word “gîte” is applied to all manner of properties, from country manoirs to modern eco-houses with self-contained suites. And those interactions in stumbling French - with the owner, neighbour or boulanger - have been the stuff of family legend, too, recalled with much laughter around the dinner table for years thereafter. In a country so rural and so regional as France, renting a traditional country cottage is inexpensive and immersive, the stuff of dream family holidays. I don't want to key off of the height of the images (which is the same) in this case, because some of the snippets will span multiple lines.Gîtes have long been the travel bargain across the Channel. Ultimately, I'm going to insert these images into a document, and I'd like to be able to use the same width for all of the images, and have the staff/notes be the same size. If I make the snippet three bars, with c4 d e f | g a b c | c b a g, I get a file that is 335 pixels wide. \relative c' %insert whitespace to fill line hereĪnd compile it using $>lilypond -dbackend=eps -dno-gs-load-fonts -dinclude-eps-fonts -png test.lyĪnd it produces a file that is 241 pixels wide. I'm following the suggestions from the documentation, so I have a. I'm trying to make music-snippet images using lilypond, but I'd like each snippet to always have trailing "whitespace" so that each of these images is of the same width.
